The cryptocurrency space is becoming increasingly crowded. New people are joining every day, hoping to make a quick buck.
However, in the process they are faced with a huge amount of specific terms and jargon, which is why many beginners feel like they are “out of context.”
When I was just starting out, I felt the same way. But trust me: the effort spent learning these terms is well worth it. Yes, it may seem overwhelming at first, but you’ll get the hang of it over time. If you plan to stay in the crypto world for the long haul, understanding its vocabulary is essential for success.
Moreover, if you are not a quick learner and do not like to constantly update your knowledge, you will very quickly become outdated – after all, this field is developing at an astronomical speed.
That’s why I’ve compiled a list of key terms and concepts that are essential in the world of cryptocurrencies and Bitcoin.
A glossary of all the necessary cryptocurrency terms
- Bitcoin (capitalized): Refers to the entire ecosystem—the technology, community, protocol, and software.
- bitcoin (lowercase): A unit of currency.
- Altcoins: Any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. Examples: Ethereum, Litecoin, Dogecoin, etc.
- Bit: A fractional unit of Bitcoin. 1 BTC = 1,000,000 bits. You can even buy and sell fractions of a Bitcoin.
- Satoshi: The smallest possible unit of Bitcoin. Named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. 1 satoshi = 0.00000001 BTC.
- XBT and BTC: Two equivalent abbreviations for Bitcoin. There is no difference between them.
- Confirmation: The process of verifying a transaction on the blockchain. Miners confirm transactions every ~10 minutes when a new block is added. It is recommended to wait for at least six confirmations to avoid double spending.
- Mining: The process of computers performing complex mathematical calculations to verify transactions and secure the network. People who perform this are called miners.
- Seed phrase / Recovery phrase: A set of 12, 18, or 24 random words used to generate private and public key pairs. This phrase allows you to recover your wallet on any compatible device.
- Cryptography: The branch of mathematics and computer science that underlies the creation of cryptocurrencies.
- Private Key: A secret alphanumeric code that allows you to send your bitcoins to other addresses.
- Public Key / Bitcoin Address: The address derived from the private key where you can receive funds.
- Bitcoin wallet (hardware, software, mobile): A device or program for storing a pair of keys—public and private.
- Whitepaper: A document in which a project describes the problem and its blockchain-based solution.
- Transaction ID: A unique string that can be used to track the details of a transfer on the blockchain, including the amount, sender and recipient addresses, and date.
- Blockchain: A publicly accessible digital ledger of all transactions on the Bitcoin network.
- Satoshi Nakamoto: The anonymous creator of Bitcoin.
- Cold storage: Storing private keys offline, such as on paper or in a hardware wallet.
- HD Wallet (Hierarchical Deterministic Wallet): A wallet that generates a tree-like key structure from a single seed key.
- Hardware wallet: A physical device for securely storing keys.
- Transaction fees: A reward paid to miners by users for processing their transactions.
- P2P (Peer-to-Peer): Direct exchange between users without intermediaries.
- Block: A set of transactions that are combined by miners for verification and addition to the blockchain.
- Proof of Work (PoW): A consensus mechanism in which miners validate blocks by solving complex computational problems.
- Доказательство доли (Proof of Stake, PoS): Альтернативный механизм консенсуса, где право создавать блоки зависит от количества монет, находящихся у пользователя.
- Pump & Dump: Искусственное завышение цены на актив с последующей массовой продажей.
- Хеш (Hash): Уникальный «цифровой отпечаток» фиксированной длины, создаваемый хеш-функцией из данных любого объёма.
- ICO (Initial Coin Offering): Первичное предложение токенов, при котором проект привлекает средства от инвесторов в обмен на новые монеты.
- Хард-форк (Hard Fork): Обновление протокола, несовместимое с предыдущими версиями.
- Софт-форк (Soft Fork): Обновление, обратно совместимое со старыми версиями.
- Кран (Faucet): Сайт или сервис, раздающий небольшие суммы криптовалюты за выполнение простых заданий.
- Фиат (Fiat): Традиционная централизованная валюта, выпускаемая государством (например, доллар, евро).
- Вознаграждение за блок (Block Reward): Награда в виде криптовалюты, которую получают майнеры за добавление нового блока. На момент написания — 12,5 BTC.
- ASIC-майнер: Специализированное оборудование, разработанное исключительно для майнинга.
- Высота блока (Block Height): Количество блоков, добавленных в цепочку с момента генезис-блока.
- Халвинг (Halving): Событие, при котором вознаграждение за блок уменьшается вдвое. В Bitcoin происходит каждые 210 000 блоков.
- Хешрейт (Hash Rate): Мера вычислительной мощности сети Bitcoin.
- Криптобиржа (Crypto Exchange): Платформа для покупки и продажи криптовалют.
- Лимитный ордер (Limit Order): Заявка на покупку или продажу по заранее заданной цене.
- HODL: Жаргонное выражение, означающее «держать» активы несмотря на рыночную волатильность. Происходит от опечатки слова «hold».
- Кит (Whale): Инвестор, владеющий огромным количеством криптовалюты и способный влиять на рынок.
- Бычий настрой (Bullish): Ожидание роста цены.
- Медвежий настрой (Bearish): Ожидание падения цены.
- ATH (All-Time High): Максимальная цена актива за всю историю.
- FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out): Страх упустить выгодную возможность, особенно во время резкого роста цены.
- FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt): Распространение негативной информации, вызывающей страх и неуверенность.
- FUDster: Человек, распространяющий FUD — сознательно или по ошибке.
- To The Moon: Выражение, означающее стремительный рост цены «до небес».
- Bag Holder: Тот, кто продолжает держать альткоин после обвала, вызванного схемой «pump and dump».
